DISTANCE EDUCATION PROGRAM

This course is based on the syllabus which has been developed by the European Welding Federation and The International Institute of Welding for the education of Welding Engineers. It also follows the format of the EWF accredited courses which have been offered at the University of Adelaide and University of Wollongong for the last 5 years. It aims to provide a firm background in Materials Welding and Joining and satisfy the 'proof of knowledge' requirements of AS/NZS 3834 - Quality in Welding. The basic course leads to a graduate diploma but suitably qualified entrants may progress to a Master of Engineering practice by completion of a dissertation.

The course consists of the following elements:

  • 2 text based distance delivery packages
  • 4 weeks of on campus "summer schools"
  • Web based tutorial support and feedback
  • 2 weeks of practical welding training

Text Based Modules

Each text based module is the equivalent of one week of on-campus tuition.

Formal assessment of attainment is based on two major assignments per subject plus examinations on completion of each module. In order for the student to maintain an active involvement; additional "self-assessment" tasks are included in the texts and these are supplemented by the web based support system.

On-Campus Component

Students will be required to attend 4 weeks (120 hours) on-campus. This component consists of four modules and aims to supplement the distance delivery material by lectures from industry experts, laboratory exercises, case studies, industry visits and presentations on advanced joining technology.

Web Based Support

A web based support system has been established at http://webCT.uow.edu.au/
This incorporates:

Update information and technical support on the coursework.
Multi-choice assessment tests and progress on student feedback.
A bulletin board for student queries.

Practical Welding Training

60 hours practical training is required for IIW engineer registration and may be provided by approved local (to the student) welding training establishments. The TAFE course NBB 09 is the basis for this training. Alternatively students may satisfy the practical training requirements by completing certificates 1-9 of Australian Standard AS1796. This practical training is not mandatory for the UoW Graduate Diploma but is highly recommended.

Resource Material

In addition to the normal text based resource material the students will be provided with essential texts, technical notes and some multimedia material on CD ROM. This will be supplementary to the core teaching material and where possible proprietary packages will be used. Full library services are available to off-campus students via the internet and Australia Post
